Travel Vaccinations for Vietnam

Diphtheria: This respiratory droplet-transmitted disease poses a greater risk when mingling with locals in crowded and unsanitary living conditions.

Hepatitis A: The hepatitis A virus spreads through the consumption of contaminated food and water or direct person-to-person contact via the fecal-oral route. The risk escalates in regions with poor personal hygiene and sanitation. Travellers with underlying medical conditions, like chronic liver or kidney disease, as well as haemophiliacs, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs, are at the highest risk of severe disease.

Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is primarily transmitted through infected blood and blood products, contaminated needles and medical instruments, and sexual contact. Those planning extended stays or frequent travel, children at risk of exposure through cuts and scratches, and individuals who may require medical treatment while travelling are more susceptible to infection.

Japanese Encephalitis: This disease is transmitted through mosquito bites, with peak activity during dawn and dusk. Travellers on long stays in rural areas who cannot easily avoid mosquito exposure face the highest risk.

Rabies: Rabies is primarily spread through the saliva of infected animals, such as dogs, cats, bats, and monkeys, via bites, scratches, or contact with broken skin. The risk is elevated for those residing in remote or rural areas with limited access to medical facilities, long-term travellers, individuals engaging in high-risk activities (e.g., trekking, cycling, running) in endemic regions, people working with animals or bats, and children. Even after receiving pre-travel rabies vaccination, immediate medical attention is crucial following any animal or bat bite.

Tetanus: Contamination of cuts, burns, and wounds with tetanus spores, found in soil worldwide, can lead to tetanus infection. While a total of five doses of the tetanus vaccine is recommended for life in the UK, boosters are usually advised when proper injury treatment may not be readily available, particularly in certain countries or situations.

Typhoid: Typhoid primarily spreads through the consumption of contaminated food and water. The risk is elevated in areas with limited access to proper sanitation and safe water.

Malaria

Malaria risk in Vietnam varies across different regions. In areas such as Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Binh Phuoc, and parts of other provinces, the risk is considered low throughout the year. Travelers to these regions are generally not recommended to take antimalarial tablets. However, certain individuals with specific risk factors may be advised to consider malaria prophylaxis. This includes those planning longer stays in rural areas, visiting friends or relatives, individuals with certain medical conditions, those with compromised immune systems, or those without a functioning spleen. In such cases, antimalarials may be recommended.

In contrast, low to no malaria risk exists in other areas of Vietnam, including major cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the Red River and Mekong deltas, Phu Quoc Island, and coastal plains. Here, antimalarial tablets are not typically advised.

Regardless of your destination within Vietnam, it’s essential to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. This includes wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs, especially after sunset, using insect repellents on exposed skin, and sleeping under a mosquito net when necessary. If you develop a fever after travelling in a malarious area, seek medical attention promptly, as malaria can manifest even up to a year after exposure. For those travelling to remote areas with limited medical facilities, carrying standby emergency treatment for malaria may also be considered. Be sure to consult with your doctor or nurse for personalized advice based on your specific travel plans and health conditions.
